Stories, legends, mocking songs and panegyrics are part of the heritage that has been passed by word of mouth. At a time when there was no modern technology among the people, or any books, the favourite pastimes were storytelling by the fire in the evening, or singing of shepherds or farmers in the fields. Different stories were thus preserved in manuscripts of individuals who carefully recorded what they had heard. Collections of manuscripts are kept at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore in Zagreb, at the Department of Ethnology of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb, various collections of the State Archives in Zadar, in church books, and a part lies in various Chronicles of Sali in family houses on the island.
